Protected Areas / Critical Area
Status of Protected Areas
Since 2008, the North Pacific Right Whale has had its own designated critical habitat. A critical habitat entails that if anybody is looking to fish in the designated area, then permission from the NOAA Fisheries must be obtained before that person can do so. After review from the NOAA Fisheries, permission may be granted depending on how activities will affect the population of the endangered animal.
